SEO for Newbies
By Krezi Prophete of Web Biz Strategies for Newbies
If you ask anybody just starting out with a web biz what the most challenging part is, most likely they’ll tell you how hard it is to get a good flow of traffic. I couldn’t agree more. SEO, although probably the most critical element to success online, is also probably the most challenging aspect of web marketing. Because you cannot, and probably will not, effectively market your web biz without a working knowledge and understanding of SEO, search engine optimization. In a nutshell, if correctly applied, SEO can make the difference between you getting 3 unique visitors to your site a day and getting over 1,000 unique visitors each day. And to a newbie, 1,000 unique visitors might as well have been 1,000,000!!! In case you’re wondering why SEO is important… SEO affects your search engine rank. The higher your search engine ranking for a keyword or keyword phrase, the more likely you are to have direct traffic which will either convert to leads or sales. And if you’ve been paying attention all this time, then you know that without traffic, your website/blog is a like a store with no customers. Without customers, you have no money…and you know what that means…back to the 9-t0-5! First of all, you should know that there are two ways to get ranked in a search engine. You can use Pay-Per-Click programs, like Google Adwords, or you can get get ranked for free by optimizing your page for search engines. Personally, I prefer the free method. And you’ll come to find that, not only, will your pockets thank you for it, but the leads you get for free are much more likely to convert into sales. So then, you ask…How do I get a high ranking on a search engine like Google? There are two factors: Relevance and PageRank. Relevance is a measures how much your website matches the keyword or phrase being searched. You can increase the relevance of your page by making a few simple changes to things like the title of the page, headers on the page, your meta tags, words on the page and how frequently they occur. The second measure, PageRank, is largely determined by the number of inbound links you have for your website/blog. It has nothing to do with keywords matching. So the moral of the story is to work as hard and as diligently as possible in order to SEO your website or blog. As a result your search engine ranking will increase and you will then also drive targeted traffic to your site and have a higher chance of converting those leads into sales. To optimize your site, focus on onpage optimization (relevance & matching to keywords/phrases being searched) and offpage optimization (increasing the number of backlinks to your site).
